Plex Media Server Configuration Guide

This guide follows the HTPCBuild.com Plex Media Server Install Guide.

1. Plex Media Server should be running, if not navigate to your Start Menu -> All Programs -> Plex Media Server and click on “Plex Media Server” to launch the program. If you need to access Plex Media Server remotely, simply enter the IP address of the your Plex Media Server followed by the port. IE: http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:32400/manage/.

2. Now look in your taskbar for the Plex Media Server Logo. Right click on the logo, and click on “Media Manager….”. This will launch the Plex Media Manager in your browser.

3. Plex Media Server is relatively easy to setup, it pretty much comes ready to go. There are a few things that you may want to change, start by clicking on “Preference”. This will open the Preference window.

4. After the “Preference” window opens, you will find yourself on the General tab. Under “Friendly name”, you can enter a name for your Plex Media Server.

5. Next click on the “Library” button. There are three options to configure here:

  1. Check mark – “Update my library when changes to my folders are detected”
  2. Update my library “every 15 minutes”.
  3. “Include music sections in automatic updates” – The first scan can be lengthy, but subsequent scans will be quicker.

6. You can essentially leave “Agents”, “Languages”, and “Transcoding” alone. Next click on “myPlex”. Here you can either sign up or login to your myPlex account. Your account will tie together all your Media Servers and clients.

7. Lastly, click on “Advanced”. Here we want to make sure that “Enable DTS mix-down for Media Link clients” is enabled.

That is about it. Plex Media Server is now configured. Next I suggest you check out HTPCBuild.com Advanced Plex Configuration Guide, you can learn how to add movies, pictures, tv shows etc.
