Hopper DVR and Joey Review

Hopper DVR and Joey Review

The Hopper whole home DVR system and its satellite addon, the Joey, are bringing a new twist to Dish Network DVR subscribers. The whole home system comprises of two units, the base unit and the satellite unit. The Hopper is the base unit that stores all recordings and can hook up to your main television. The Joey is a satellite addon, that hooks up to any additional tv you wish to access the Hopper base system.

From the review, I’m a bit disappointed by the storage space. The hopper comes with a 2TB drive, but only 1TB is usable. However it does provide eSata port allowing you to expand you storage. It also lacks HDMI CEC, streaming capability to your mobile devices, Hopper to Hopper sharing, and numerous USB ports (can this be used for storage as well?).

The Hopper and Joey whole DVR system to be a fairly capable entry level unit for almost any TV enthusiast. However, I think more demanding users might look to something like a Media Server with CableCard Tuner or an all in one system like the Ceton Q and Ceton Echo.

Thanks for the link; I’ve been interested to see how others have reviewed their Hopper and Joeys. I’ve been pleased with my Hopper and Joeys, and they’ve definitely stopped me from wanting to ring my husband’s neck. With our old VIP 722K, he would always manage to accidentally stop one of my recordings while I was at work during the day. We both decided to upgrade when my boss at Dish told us that the Hopper would have a DVR capacity of up to 500 hours of HD recording time. So far, it’s more memory than we can fill so no complaints here. The PrimeTime Anytime feature has been a lifesaver because during primetime, we can record up to six things at once, and my husband’s neck is free from harm. Thanks again!
